Love Your Workout Space

Deciding to leave the comfort of a corporation isn’t easy. Leaving a corporation to go completely independent is even harder. When I realized the monthly quota stress was affecting my enjoyment of working with clients, I decided to go solo. But…where would I work? I had several people wanting to workout with me, but membership and training costs were too expensive. If money wasn’t the problem, the client wasn’t comfortable working out in a large gym.

Finding a Great Workout Space

Fortunately for me, my massage therapist told me about a trainer (Albert Squires) she was working with in a small, private gym. I decided to check it out. The first time, I went in solo and met a couple of the trainers. The second time I took my husband to make sure the gym had everything needed to successfully work with clients.

Where the Heck Is This Workout Place?

The door says REPS. It is located on North Amphlett Blvd in San Mateo and run by Josh Sellers. Josh is awesome. The space has everything trainers and clients need – dumbbells, bars, free weights, fixed weight machines, TRX, cardio machines, boxes, and more. There is enough of space for a few trainers and clients to work without tripping over each other. Josh also does well managing how many people are using the space at one time to make sure there is adequate space for all.

As someone who used to be, and is now working with someone who is, gym shy, this is the perfect gym! As I continue my journey to Austin, Texas next month, I can honestly say that I am going to miss Josh Sellers, Albert Squires, Mark Monay, and their clients. Over the past few months I have really enjoyed the small, family feeling of working here – as have my clients.

If you are a trainer considering setting up your own business, a trainer looking for a new space, or a client with a trainer looking for a training location, I cannot recommend REPS enough.

If You Love Me, You Will Feed Me

Food Contributors

  • When you are the cook and in denial that you are affecting the health of others: I cook with love.
  • When you are the consumer and in denial that you have a problem: I eat what is in front of me.

By now, you should know my thoughts on how to start eating healthier…but a quick reminder:

  1. Stop the excuses
  2. Measure and weigh your food
  3. Log what you eat
  4. Prepare your meals

I mentioned in a recent article that I watch My 600-Lb Life and I like Dr. Now. If you haven’t watched the show – watch at least one episode. While I don’t know anyone with weight issues similar to Dr. Now’s patients, I do know people that live similar lifestyles.

What’s the Lifestyle?

Blaming others for how and what they eat. I’ve seen many people successfully lose lots of weight by following a weight loss program and within days of “finishing” the program, they revert back to old habits. Old habits come back for various reasons; one of which is going back to buying and ordering bad food. In a marriage, one spouse might do all the shopping and cooking, so the other simply eats what is put in front of them. For children, they are either following their parent’s lead or they are controlling the food purchases.

Love with Food

Almost every week, someone – who knows they make poor food choices – says to me If it wasn’t in the house, I wouldn’t eat it. Who is to blame? If you purchased the food, then you are at fault. If you continually eat the food that others buy, then you are at fault. When you make food choices because of what your kids choose to eat, then you are at fault.

If you love yourself and others in your life, choose to feed everyone better. Stop buying and eating the crap food. Be an example and be a parent by making smart food choices based on their health, not them stopping or pouting because they aren’t getting what they want.

Certified Personal Trainers Do More Than Lift

At least the good ones do…

At a weekly meeting last week, I was asked to share with the group something about what I do that people might not know.

Certifications

I stated how I am CPR AED certified; that I can stretch body parts and break knots; that I know what a calorie is and the importance of macros in a diet; and that I can work with anyone – from children to the elderly in pretty much any physical condition.

This surprised everyone in the room. They viewed me as someone that simply shows a person how to work with weights and move around a gym. I would like to say that I am surprised, but I am not. There are many perceptions about personal trainers because of how they behave in the gym setting – from spending more time on their cell phones that focusing on their clients, to how they execute a personal work out.

Lots to Learn

Studying to become a personal trainer didn’t occur overnight. This was a career change for me. This is something that I wanted to pursue and execute well. I studied for over 2 months and became certified through the National Council on Strength & Fitness (NCSF). It is now up to me to maintain my certification. How do I maintain/recertify? For starters, I have to retake the CPR AED course every two years. I also have to earn educational credits. This is where I get to have fun – but it isn’t cheap. There are so many options out there and it is up to me to determine my own path.

Similar to my workouts, I love variety. I want to help a variety of people so that I don’t feel like I am doing the same thing day in and day out. Because I love sports, I am currently studying to become a strength coach. I have completed TRX and Bulgarian Bag courses and am certified with Axius Core which has provided me with a good mix of mediums to train with. Next month, I am completing the Pre/Postnatal Specialty Certificate to become a Pronatal Certified Trainer.

It is Too Late to Lose Weight, Move, or Get Healthy

For many people there is a certain age that is considered to be too late or too old. Other people simply feel like “I’ve been this way for so long, I can’t…” The can’t is typically about losing weight, making changes, or feeling better.

I stand ~5’ 3”, was at 47% body fat, weighing in at more than 250 pounds, and 39 when I joined the gym. I had plantar fasciitis and nerve pain in both feet, my knees ached, and my cardiovascular fitness didn’t exist. I was also dealing with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypothyroidism. These were my excuses.

Find a Motivator

I hated many things – looking at my reflection, shopping, dressing up, or even getting out of bed. I was jealous of others – for looking nice and being able to buy clothes anywhere, including online without having to try them on first.

I felt like crap. Having two dogs that love to be exercised, but not have energy in addition to the foot issues, I was struggling. The dogs were also heavy, even though their diet was fairly healthy. I felt like I was failing my kids.

Get Started

Start working with a trainer 2 days a week. It does not matter what your goal is. Two days a week is the way to go. Spend the first 2-4 weeks undoing bad posture, fixing form, and getting stable. Spend the first two months learning about nutrition and what you are putting into your body. For the first month, I didn’t change much in my diet, I just started moving. Month two, I started logging my food and gradually changing my diet.

Keep Motivated Beyond the First Three Months

The first 3 months were mentally frustrating. It took over three months to really start seeing physical changes even though the scale and measurements were reflecting changes. At the four month mark, I had to buy smaller clothes and people started commenting. What helped me was that I was feeling better and I wanted that feeling to continue.

Toughen Up. Walk it Off.

Even with my body still aching, I pushed through. Realizing the foot and knee pain was linked to my weight and that, as I was losing the weight, the pain wasn’t flaring up as often, really helped.

Drop the Excuses

It is never too late. Get up. Get moving. Find something that works for you. Pain is mental. It really is. Find a way to deal with it and push through. I chose to ignore my aches during my exercise, but after my workouts I elevated and iced my arches and had a muscle relaxer. When I was down 50 pounds at 5 months in, the pain stopped. Everything mentioned at the start of the article is gone. Well I am still 5’3″, but I feel like I stand taller and my posture is better. My hypothyroidism will always exist because I have nodules, but my medication fixes that.

If you are morbidly obese, I recommend working with a personal trainer. Not because I am one, but because it is the best thing you can do for yourself. Good trainers make you feel safe, challenge you, keep you accountable, and push you to push yourself. Without my trainer, I would have given into pains or found excuses to stop. With his help and support, I have a healthy routine in my life that includes nutrition and exercise as well as an awesome lifelong friendship.
